History & Mission
The following is the history of two leading Canadian agri-business and agri-food recruiting firms who have joined forces as a fortified alliance:
From 1993 to 1998, Grasslands Training Group provided re-employment and career transition services, plus computer, safety, and business training. During that period, career transition services were provided into Saskatchewan and southern Alberta, assisting 1100 people through
In 1997, the training division was wound down, and an Executive Search and Employment / Psychometric Assessment business was developed. The early focus was on Western Canada and its niche of primary industries. Rebranded as Grasslands Recruitment Specialists, GRS has consistently researched, developed, coordinated, and delivered services to businesses and individuals across most prairie-based economic sectors; earning the right to serve clients throughout North America.
In 2006, a separate operating division, SmartHire®, was created to offer employment assessments, pre-hiring, and onboarding systems.
AgStep Agriculture Recruiting
In 1997, AgCall Human Resources was established to focus on permanent placement recruiting for the Canadian agricultural industry. As the client base evolved and expanded, AgCall HR was incorporated in 2005. An industry-specific job board was soon added to provide a full spectrum of talent acquisition services.
In 2017, AgCall HR Inc was rebranded with new images and messaging as AgStep Agriculture Recruiting. This action also served to separate the business from the legacy AgCall brand. In the fall of 2018, managing partner Mike Bachner assumed full ownership of the company.
Since its beginning in 1997, this organization has had a national focus with key staff located in major markets across Canada. They know the industry and the people in the industry! The focus has been across all sectors of the industry- from row-crop agriculture to horticulture, to rural finance, livestock production and aquaculture- always with an agri-business specialty.
On November 1, 2018, AgStep Agriculture Recruiting and Grasslands Group of Companies Inc. joined forces to further solidify their companies
Mike Bachner, President at AgStep Agriculture Recruiting, has more than 22 years’ experience in agri-food industry recruiting primarily within Eastern Canada. He joins Blair Clark, President at Grasslands Group of Companies, in merging their two companies – combining their expertise into almost 50 years of service to the Canadian agricultural recruitment sector. Operating under the Grasslands Recruitment Specialists banner, this alliance of two veterans in the industry, along with our strong recruiting teams with an additional 25 years of A&A search experience, will continue to provide successful talent-acquisition services for Canadian agricultural companies seeking to hire high-calibre individuals in senior management, general management, finance, operations, sales and marketing, and related science disciplines.
As both firms have complementary business practices and clients, the partners recognize that this alliance fortifies their organizations by pooling their resources and experience to drive the business forward and expand their services into new areas, building on each other’s strengths and networks. “We will support our clients in making the connections needed to obtain talent and, ultimately, acquire results. Our clients recognize that finding top talent is a strategic activity and they seek our expertise for a positive ROI.”
